Osteopathic Headache Treatment
Have you ever wondered whether headaches can be treated by an osteopath? At Vibe Natural Health in Brisbane, we often have clients asking us this very question.
If the headache or migraine is caused by or contributed to by musculoskeletal factors, then the answer is yes. Muscle tension, posture and pain can all contribute to headaches and migraines.
Our osteopaths are comprehensively trained to assess and treat painful symptoms caused by tight muscles. They often work with headaches such as tension headaches, sinus headaches, post-related headaches and even migraines.
Sometimes, the root cause in your headache isn’t even in your head! Our muscles and bones work as a system, and sometimes an issue lower in the body can manifest as pain in the head area. Many headaches are triggered by tension in the neck, shoulders and upper back area.
Is headache pain stopping you from enjoying life?
At Vibe Natural Health, our osteopaths see patients who suffer from headaches and migraines every day. For some, headaches are a nuisance. For others, it can be devastating to quality of life, especially if you experience severe chronic or recurring headaches.
When you see one of our osteopaths, your practitioner will aim to give you relief from headache-related pain. Research suggests that osteopathy may reduce the occurrence of future headaches and need for pain medication.
As osteopathy treats the whole body, we may identify that something in your lower body is contributing to your headache. By addressing imbalances throughout the body, we may be able to relieve symptoms relating to
- Tension headache
- Sinus headache
- Postural headache
- Migraines
- Cervical pain
- Temporomandibular (TMJ) jaw pain

What to expect from your Osteopathic Headache Treatment consultation
As every patient is looking for relief for different types of headache pain, treatment is tailored to your needs. In your first session, your osteopath will take a detailed case history to identify causes and contributing factors to your headache pain.
Once your osteopath has identified these, you will receive a hands-on treatment designed to relieve symptoms. For example, if your headaches are related to posture, we may begin by treating your back and shoulders. This allows the shoulders to roll back, loosening tense muscles that pull up through the neck and cause headache pain.
After we achieve some relief of pain, we focus on calming the nervous system to minimise the experience of pain. We’ll also help you to identify any other contributing factors and suggest tactics to address or remove those factors.
Some clients will experience relief of headaches and migraines within 1-2 sessions. Some require longer-term care before seeing results, which is often due to there being complex and chronic underlying factors.
